Methods Differ
Different companies use different methods to measure square footage of new homes, making it important to know which method was used when comparing different builder's estimates. Some companies measure a home's square footage by the interior framing and others measure to the outside of the siding material. In general, unheated and unfinished areas such as garages and some basements are not included in square footage, but in different cases may be. A staircase can be counted once or twice depending on what level it's on. These differences can have a large impact on the home's stated square footage and cost per square foot. It is always worth it to check when comparing and choosing.
