Pole building techniques have been around for ages, but really took off in the 1930's when booming corporate farming practices required more affordable storage space for equipment, livestocks and goods. Pole barns got their name from the materials used to build them in the beginning; telephone and utility poles. These were a convenient and rather cheap material used for the structure, and had great success for it's users. Not long after, more reliable materials were made especially for building pole barns. Pole barns are stable structures because they consist of load-bearing poles anchored deep in the ground by cement. The trend hasn't slowed. Because they are so affordable, customizable and reliable, pole barns remain a staple in many forms: agriculture, storage garages, commercial, office spaces and storefronts.
